<!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->April 26, 1932-Feb. 18, 2015 MR. WALTER WARREN COX Of Macon, Georgia, formerly of Elba, Al passed away on February 18, 2015. He was 82. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Elba United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stanley Carter and Rev. Charles Avery officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, February 20, 2015 at Hayes Funeral Home, 431 Davis St E, Elba, AL. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Elba United Methodist Church Building Fund, 503 Davis Street W, Elba, AL 36323 or the Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131. Active pall bearers will be, Chan Cox, John Ed Cox, Allen Tanton, Charlie Mobley, John Mobley, Tom Mobley, David Mobley & James Larry Faulkner. Honorary pall bearers will be Rev. Donnie Marler and J D Walker. Mr. Cox was born 4/26/1932 and raised in Slocomb, Alabama. In 1955 he graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, played football for the Crimson Tide and was active in the Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation, Mr. Cox received his commission as a Second Lieutenant to serve in the United States Air Force as a pilot. Walter was the 3rd generation in his family to own a hardware store. His grandfather, father, four uncles and two brothers all owned hardware businesses in the south Alabama towns of Slocomb, Columbia, Florala, Hartford, Luverne and Ozark. In 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Cox moved to Elba with their three young children to buy the Elba Western Auto Store, which they owned for 37 years. Walt loved flying his Cessna, watching the Crimson Tide, dancing with Betty in the Enterprise Dance Club, traveling and spending many memorable days at Sunnyside Beach. As a member of Elba United Methodist Church he served on the Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Committee and worked with the youth group. Mr. Cox was one of the founders of the Peoples Bank of Elba (now Troy Bank and Trust) and served on the Board of Directors until he retired. He was also a member of the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club in which he won the Paul Harris Fellow Award. Walter Cox was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and C.A.F. Cox, his son ,Steven Cox, sisters: Charlie B. Cox Moore and Lorena Cox Avery, brothers: Hughey Cox and Chandler Cox. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Mobley Cox, daughters: Bunny Cox Suplit (Bill) of Stow, OH; Beverly Cox Suever (David) of Atlanta, GA; Margaret Ann Hunt (Rob, Jr.) of Macon, GA; son, Paul Mobley Cox (Wendy) of Birmingham, AL; Grandchildren, William Suplit, University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and Wesley Suplit, Grove City College, PA; Patrick, Katie, Christian and Julian Cox all of Birmingham; Gavin Hunt, Mississippi State University and Hayden Hunt of Macon, GA, brother, John E. Cox (Susan) of Ozark, AL and a sister, Joy Cox Tanton (Jerry) of Hartford, AL. Survivors also include sisters-in-law, Sara Margaret Cox of Geneva, AL and Nell Cox Rich of Dothan, AL and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caregivers and Heartland Hospice in Macon, GA.
