Walter-George Lee, spouse of Jerrine Lee, daughter of Walter and Edith, died on December 7, 1924.
LEE, Walter George December 7th, 1924 - August 25th, 2012 Wally was born in Toronto to Walter and Edith (nee Hine) Lee, and grew up in Winnipeg. He served in the navy during WWII and saw action on the high seas as an escort to merchant ships. After the war Wally earned his teaching degree from the University of Toronto, taught in the city for a year, then taught overseas in Ethiopia for three years. He returned to Canada in 1953 and began work with the National Film Board of Canada where he spent a fulfilling 37 years promoting Canadian film around the world. Wally married Jerrine Walmsley in 1959 and they lived in Winnipeg, then several years in New Delhi where Wally was S.E. Asia representative for the NFB. Daughter Jennifer was born there and several years later they were back in Montreal where daughter Andrea was born. They also spent a short time in Vancouver then finally to Victoria where Wally retired in 1988 after working at the Wharf and Government Street NFB office for 13 years. Some of his most notable accomplishments with the NFB were showing films under the stars in India, working to promote women filmmakers and films about women, and his work at the grassroots level forming film councils and societies in small towns across Canada. After retirement Wally became involved in buying and selling collectibles and could be found "on the trail" at garage sales, auctions, and flea-markets on a regular basis. He had a life-long affection for books and had hundreds in his personal library. He developed a great interest in his father's history and traced his roots back to England where his father was a Barnardos boy before coming to Canada. Wally had a lifelong love of nature and a keen interest in birds and spent many enjoyable hours birding. He passed on his love of nature to his daughters, and often spent an afternoon sharing his birding books with his granddaughters, who will always remember Granddad teaching them to listen to the trees. Wally fulfilled his life's many roles with enthusiasm and dedication. He was a generous and caring father to daughters Jennifer (Kim) and Andrea (John), and proud grandfather to Tessa, Amber, Scarlett, and Halle. He was predeceased by his wife Jerrine, his sister Iris Lee, and brother Victor Lee (Nora). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honour to the Royal BC Museum Foundation, Ornithology Department - 675 Belleville Street, Victoria, BC, CANADA V8W 9W2.
