Obituary of Walter-Edward Mack


Mack, Walter Edward Albion: Eight days short of his 90th birthday, entered into rest May 14, 2010 at the Batavia Veterans Home. Born to John and Anna Mack May 22, 1920, he lived his entire life in Orleans County, with the exception of three years in Army hospitals following WW II. Like many farm boys of his generation, he joined the US Army, swapping his hunting rifle for a carbine. He served with the 45th Thunderbird Div-ision, 157th Infantry Regiment, was wounded in France in 1944, and received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Combat Infantry Badge. He was a tool and die maker and a model maker for 35 years at General Electric in Brockport. He was Past Commander of the Strickland Post #4635 VFW, a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Sheret Post #35 American Legion, the Albion Knights of Columbus, the B.P.O.Elks Albion Lodge, and he directed the American Contract Bridge League. He was proud of his family, his military service, and his achievement of the rank of Bronze Life Master at the bridge table. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening, bridge, making wine and cider, reading, poetry, and puttering. He hunted until the age of 88. Walter was predeceased by his wife Mary and brother Frank. He is survived by his loving companion of 24 years, Betty Dutton; daughters Marilyn (Dan) Waingarten of Webster, Elaine (Wayne) Cook of Spencerport, Patricia (Fred) Halt of Grand Island, Constance (Rev. Thomas) Taylor of Avon, Susan Mack (Danny Meyer) of San Francisco; sons Walter A. Mack of Rochester, Stephen Mack (Vera) of Rush; grandchildren John Cook, Patrick Pettit, Joel Taylor, David Waingarten, Anna and Jeremy Mack, Simon and Samara Meyer; great-grandchildren Andrew, Robert, and Matthew Cook, Gavin and Avery Taylor; sisters Mary Rowan of Rochester, Adeline Millis of Carlton; brother Joseph Mack of Florida; sister-in-law Elizabeth Hurysz of Rochester; a host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives; good neighbors Bill and Shirley Rosato. Walter's family will receive friends at the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc. 21 W. Avenue Albion Monday May 17, from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00. Walter's Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday May 18, at 10:00am at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph's Church. Interment at St Joseph's Cemetery with full military honors.
