COLUMBIA - Services for Walter E. Henderson, 103, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, April 17, 2003, in Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Heartland Nursing Center, 2601 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204. Caughman-Harman Funeral Homes, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, is in charge. Mr. Henderson, widower of Mabel G. Henderson, died April 14, 2003. Born in Brevard, N.C., Oct. 26, 1899, he was the son of the late Joseph A. Henderson and Martha Searcy Henderson. He lived in Spartanburg for 50 years before moving to Columbia in 1972. Mr. Henderson was co-owner of Henderson and Fain Barber Shop on Pine Street in Spartanburg. He was a veteran of World War I, Battery F, Sixty-first Artillery. Mr. Henderson served in France 2 1/2 years. He was a charter member of American Legion Post 28 in Spartanburg, was past president of S.C. Barbers Association, was a life member and past president of Spartanburg Lions Club, was a Mason and past master of Spartanburg Masonic Lodge No. 333, Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree, Valley of Columbia, class of 1974. Mr. Henderson was a former member of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, serving on the Board of Deacons. He served in vocational training for Cedar Springs School for the Deaf and Blind and taught a class of barbering for deaf students. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Baroca co-ed class Sunday school. An avid golfer until May 1999, he received the Order of the Palmetto in October 1998 from Governor David Beasley.
