Obituary of Walter Cox


TRENTON - Walter Cox, 93, of Trenton, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at his home.Raised and educated in Preston, Ga., Mr. Cox moved to Trenton in 1940. He was employed as a construction worker and retired from Acme Rubber, and the State of New Jersey – Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. He joined Friendship Baptist Church in 1956 where he served on the usher board. He joined the Usher's Council of Trenton and Vicinity and served as head marshall for 39 years. He joined Harmony Lodge No. 55, IF&AMM in 1953. Walter was also a member of the Elk's Lodge.Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Cox, parents, Willie and Susie Cox, five brothers, Clinton, Robert, Charlie, Will and George Lee Cox, three sisters, Willie Mae Cox-Brown, Alberta Cox-Johnson, and Katherine Cox Lowe.Surviving are his daughter, Joan Cox-Keith; three grandchildren, Larissa D. Starr, Continna N. Starr, and Charles J. Keith Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Shareka W. Starr and Elijah J. McRae, all of Trenton; one brother, Clayton Cox Sr.; four nephews, Major Brown (Blanch) of Trenton, Sammie Lowe Sr. of Detroit, Mich., Otis Rogers of Las Vegas, Nev. and William Cox of Trenton; seven nieces, Edna Jackson (Jesse), Susie Edwards (Roosevelt) of Alabama, Bertha Cox-Collins of Marianea, Fla., Essie Cox-Stackhouse (Timothy), Carol Cox, and Cecelia Jones; and host of great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, great-great-nephews, great-great-nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, at Friendship Baptist Church, 111 Perry St., Trenton. Interment will be in Ewing Cemetery.Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, (Oct. 3) with organizational services beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1225 Calhoun St., Trenton. Additional calling hours are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
