William Miles (John) McDermott, age 65, was born in Wilmington, DE, on September 20, 1937. William died after a courageous battle with small cell lung cancer in his home at 40 Old Route 9W in Tomkins Cove, NY. He is survived by his wife of 37 years Kate E. McDermott. He was the proud father of two sons Lt. Commander Sean Patrick McDermott, United States Navy and Patrick Kevin McDermott of Astoria, Queens, NY. William is survived by two brothers Miles E. McDermott of Woodstock, MD and Reverend Michael Joseph McDermott of Wilmington, DE. He leaves his two dear grandchildren Olivia Ann McDermott and Miles William McDermott in the loving care of their parents Sean and Ava McDermott of Norfolk, VA. William served as a Captain and an expert rifleman in the United States Marine Corps both in the States and in the Diplomatic Corps in Paris, France. He has been politically active in the Democratic Party all of his adult life. He served as the Democratic Party Chairman, Police Commissioner and Budget Officer for the Town of Stony Point for many years. Bill was involved for many years in the New City Jaycees and founded a chapter at Letchworth Village for the patients there. William was a local president, a district president and then was nominated to be a Jaycee International Senator. William was a Senior Internal Auditor for Nestle's, Inc. of White Plains, NY for over 27 years. He retired at 58 due to poor health and he has remained active in the community. The greatest joy of his retirement years has been sharing his time with his family and close friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Stony Point on Tuesday at 10 am. Friends may call at Finn's Funeral Home on Main Street in Stony Point on Monday, January 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Anyone wishing to make donations may do so to the Bobbie Lewis Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital or to United Hospice of Rockland who both have served him well. EDWARD C.
