Obituary of Vivian Millar

MILLAR Vivian Marie, a resident of Ridgewood since 1951, died February 14, 2015. Born in Clifton, NJ in 1919, 2 years after World War I. She grew up in the Roaring Twenties and was 10 years old when the market crashed in 1929. Then came the Great Depression…times were very hard. She was the 10th child of Dutch immigrants who came through Ellis Island in the late 19th Century, Peter Maat and his wife Marie. She was a member of the 'Greatest Generation,' a book by Tom Brokaw. In 1942 Vivian married David Millar, and engineer who was sent to India to work for the British Admiralty during World War II. Three years later David came home and they started their family. William D. Millar was born in Queens, New York in 1946, and he has lived in Ridgewood for 64 years. John D. Millar was born in 1952, and lives in Omaha, Nebraska, with his wife Pat. Faye V. Okma was born in 1956 and lives in New London, N.H. with her husband Ed and sons Zach and Ethen. Vivian worked for Curtiss-Wright Corp. Propeller Division and Prudential ins. Corp during World War II. Dave and Vivian were members of the Upper Ridgewood Community Church in Ridgewood and the Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club. Our Mother was an extraordinary human being. She was soft spoken, kind, gentle, patient, sincere and radiated love and joy and warmth to all. She never used a harsh word to anyone. Mom took her journey by the Road Less Traveled By. She does 'Not Sleep!" She is " a thousand winds that blow. The Diamond Glints on the new fallen snow, the sunlight on the ripened grain, the gentle autumn's rain when you awaken in the morning's hush. The swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in flight"…We will not cry… She did not die. Fair thee well, Mom. We sing your favorite hymn, 'Precious Memories' by J.B.F Wright… "Precious Memories, unseen angels, sent from somewhere to my soul; How they linger, ever near me, and the sacred past unfold. Precious Father, loving Mother, fly across the lonely years; and old Home Scenes of my childhood in fond memory appear. In the stillness of the midnight, echoes from the past I hear; old time singing, gladness bringing, from that lovely land somewhere. Precious Memories, now they linger, how they ever flood my soul; in the stillness of the midnight, precious sacred scenes unfold…" There will be a Celebration of Vivian's Life Sunday, February 22, 2015, from 3-5 PM at the Feeney Funeral Home, 232 Franklin Ave, Ridgewood, NJ, with the Memorial Service at 4 PM.
