Obituary of Virginia-Spangler Wood


June 7, 2004 Virginia Spangler Wood, 93, of The Nottingham, Jamesville, died Monday, June 7, 2004, exactly 60 years to the day that her brother, Col. Jack Spangler was killed in the Normandy Invasion. Born in Barnesboro, PA, she was a graduate of Penn State University, Class of 1932. She married Reginald D. Wood on August 26, 1935. Mr. Wood died in June of 2000. Mrs. Wood was the administrative assistant in the Geology Department at Syracuse University, retiring in 1972. She was a resident of the Syracuse area since 1944 and was a member of the University United Methodist Church. Virginia was also a member of the Penn State Alumni Association, Alphi Chi Omega, American Association of University Women, Gertrude Brown Guild at University Church and the Strathmore Book Club. Survivors: a son Arthur Wood and his partner, Rev. Alan Hall of Toronto; a sister, Lovell Frear of Sterling, VA; a brother, James Spangler of Tucson, AZ; six nieces and nephews, Lovell Ann, Virginia, Jack, Robby, Cindy and Bertrand. Memorial Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at the University United Methodist Church, 1085 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. Burial will be at a future date at Pine Hall Cemetery, State College, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University United Methodist Church will be greatly appreciated.
