DOVER ; Virginia Lee Smith, 86, of 1 Riverside Drive, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, after a period of declining health. Virginia was born Oct. 15, 1921, in Laconia, N.H., the daughter of Haven and Esther Corliss. She graduated from Laconia High School in 1939. Predeceasing her was her husband of 64 years, Wendell T. Smith, Jr. They met while attending Keene State College and were married Sept. 24, 1942, while Wendell was on leave from U.S. Navy service during World War II. Virginia was also predeceased by two sisters, Jane Tyler, of Gilford, and Ann Corliss, of Laconia.A longtime resident of Dover, Virginia enjoyed being a homemaker and volunteering her time and service at the First Parish Congregational Church, where she was a 50-year member. She especially enjoyed knitting and spending time with friends in the Craft Group at the church. She also loved being at the family cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee. Surviving is her son, Wendell "Skip" Smith, III, and wife, Susan, of Dover; her granddaughter, Lindsay Smith Haugh, and husband, Steve, of Northborough, Mass.; her grandson, Gregg Smith and wife, Athanasia, and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Noah Smith of Medfield, Mass. There will be a memorial service Thursday, Sept. 4, at 6 p.m. at First Parish Congregational Church in Dover followed by refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the First Parish Congregational Church Building Fund, 218 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.
