Harrington on Sunday Dec 29, 2013.Born in Yonkers, NY on August 9, 1929, Virginia was the daughter of the late Samuel and Helen Crawford. On December 14, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers, NY, Virginia married John J. Harrington Jr. who predeceased her on March 10, 1987. In addition to her parents and husband, Virginia was predeceased by her brothers, Samuel and Joseph Crawford (who died when a baby).Virginia graduated from Gorton High School, Yonkers, NY and the Cochran School of Nursing, St. John's Hospital, also in Yonkers. Virginia became a Registered Nurse and worked primarily as a private duty nurse at various hospitals in southern Westchester and NYC. Virginia continued her education, earning her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Pace University and became a Nurse Practitioner. Virginia worked many years as a Nurse Practitioner and also taught at Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers, NY.Survivors include her four sons John J. Harrington III and wife Mariza of Hollywood, FL, Dennis P. Harrington and wife Deborah of Denville, NJ, Kevin T. Harrington and wife Amy of Union Vale, NY, Richard J. Harrington and wife Susan of Irvington, NY; her two daughters Virginia A. Harrington of Minneapolis, MN and Lori P. Harrington and partner Carol Meyer of NY, NY; her grandchildren Jason Harrington, Elise Rich, Alexandra Harrington, Sean Harrington, Brett Harrington, Paige Daugherty, Jack Harrington, Rebecca Harrington, Riley Harrington, Ian Harrington and Spencer Sweeney; as well as seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.Virginia was a loving mother who was fiercely protective of her children, each of whom was "her favorite." She loved the ocean and enjoyed boating on the Hudson River when her children were young. Virginia retired to Maine, where she loved bird watching both at her home feeders and at various refuges nearby. She was particularly fond of hummingbirds and owls. Virginia was proud of her Scottish heritage and enjoyed her visit to Scotland, especially the Highlands.Calling hours will be on Friday, January 10th from 4-8 PM at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers, NY. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 11th at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY. Interment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
