Virginia Hughes Smith, 71, of Riverside Nursing Home, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001. Born in Pickens County, she was the widow of James F. Smith, and a daughter of the late William Edward and Dora Turner Hughes. Ms. Smith was retired from Greenville Memorial Hospital Home Healthcare CNA department and was a member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, George Roger Smith, of Hazel Green, Ala.; her daughter, Gail Badeaux, of New Orleans, La.; sisters, Wilma Strange of Piedmont, Ruth Rowland of Greenville, Beulah Faye Mills of Powdersville, and Frances Pritchett of Axle, Texas; brothers, Calvin Hughes of Easley, and the Rev. James E. Hughes of Powdersville; grandchildren, Roger Eugene Smith and Jeffrey Robert Smith; four great-grandchildren; and best friend, Carl Thurston. She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Tucker; and four brothers, Alvin, Roy, Clyde and Andrew Hughes. Service: 11 a.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery West. Memorials may be made to Widows Fund at Truth Missionary Baptist Church, 200 Saluda Dam Road, Greenville, SC 29611. Family members are at their respective homes.
