Virginia Hughes Smith, 71, of Riverside Nursing Home, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001. Born in Pickens County, she was the widow of James F. Smith, and a daughter of the late William Edward and Dora Turner Hughes. Ms. Smith was retired from Greenville Memorial Hospital Home Healthcare CNA department and was a member of Truth Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, George Roger Smith, of Hazel Green, Ala.; her daughter, Gail Badeaux, of New Orleans, La.; sisters, Wilma Strange of Piedmont, Ruth Rowland of Greenville, Beulah Faye Mills of Powdersville, and Frances Pritchett of Axle, Texas; brothers, Calvin Hughes of Easley, and the Rev. James E. Hughes of Powdersville; grandchildren, Roger Eugene Smith and Jeffrey Robert Smith; four great-grandchildren; and best friend, Carl Thurston. She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Tucker; and four brothers, Alvin, Roy, Clyde and Andrew Hughes. Service: 11 a.m. today at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery West.
