MANCHESTER- Virginia E. Davis, 87, passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Dover, on May 20, 1926, the daughter of Walter and Helen (Hatch) Bowen. She graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1944, and was joined in marriage to Melvin P. Davis on Jan. 22, 1949. The following years were spent raising and caring for her family, a role she loved. With her family grown, she enjoyed a 10 year career as a salesperson with Filene's Department Store. Virginia was a member of the First Congregational Church for over 70 years, where she participated in youth education, the choir and several women's groups. She volunteered with United Way and the VNA. She was accomplished in needlework, sewing and knitting, as well as drawing. Virginia is survived by three children, Susan Davis -Webel and husband Frederick, Wayne Davis and wife Sharon, and Barbara Kulig and husband Leo. Virginia was also the grandmother of five: Garrick, Kirsti, Holly, Katharine and Elizabeth and great-grandmother to four: Ally, Tegan, Sean and Aaron. One of seven children, Virginia is survived by sisters Louise Worrell and Carolyn Grubb and her husband Alan, and brothers Richard Bowen and his wife, Sally, and Robert Bowen and his wife Joyce. She is also survived by her uncle, Richard M. Hatch, sister-in-law Joan Kane, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Melvin in 1994, a sister, Priscilla Bowen Leavitt, and brother Walter E. Bowen III. . SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A graveside service will begin at 2:30 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 16, in Pine Grove Cemetery, 765 Brown Avenue, in Manchester. Friends may gather at the main gate after 2 p.m. Virginia's family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Hanover Hill Health Care Center for the exceptional care and kindness provided to their mother.
