JOHNSON, Virginia Alyne WilcoxAge 98 of Cookeville, died Monday, August 18, 2008 at her home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 24, 2008 at 2 p.m., at Cookeville First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Woody Adams, Rev. Max Mayo, Rev. Drew Shelley and Rev. Jim Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. She was born November 5, 1909 in Putnam County, TN to the late Eason Birch and Melonee Martha Glover Wilcox. Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church. She taught business communications for many years at Tech in the College of Business. In 1921, she first played both the organ and the piano for Cookeville First Methodist Church. She was the organist for the church for 62 years. She played for the men's brotherhood, and for thousands of weddings and funerals. Her music was a large part of her gift to her community. Virginia was honored by the men's brotherhood with the title of Queen Mother. The First Methodist Church, for her long commitment and love for the members, also honored her with the naming of the Virginia Johnson Hand Bells. She held membership in various book clubs, food and garden clubs, and the parent-teachers associations. Virginia was a staunch supporter of all her sons' activities. Their sports activities were a first priority for her. She was known to descend from the football stadium onto the sidelines to remind one of them to put their mouthguard in place. Also, ever so discretely, she would give them encouraging hugs after they would leave the gym door after the game commenced, no matter the outcome. She was a consistent visitor to the neighbors, church members, nursing home residents and others with her home made pies, cookies and cakes. Among her many talents, cooking for others was a favorite. She was a long time pink lady volunteer at the Cookeville General Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dean William Louis Johnson, Jr. of Tennessee Tech. Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. William Louis III and Jennifer Johnson of Atlanta, GA and Dr. John Wilcox and Claire Johnson of Spartanburg, SC; four grandchildren, William Louis Johnson IV and wife Emily of Atlanta, GA, Allyson Lea Johnson Hodge and husband Chip of Beaufort, SC, Charles Wilcox Johnson of Spartanburg, SC and William John Glover Johnson and wife Carolyn of Nashville, TN; two great-grandsons, Clare Carmi Hodge IV (Cole) and Ryder Austin Hodge.
