PORTSMOUTH — Violet L. Carter, 88, formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Oceanside Healthcare in Hampton.Born March 8, 1922, in Debden, England, she married her Air Force husband, John Carter of Georgia during World War II and then moved to the United States.She was a very kind and special mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Her family was the most important thing to her. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and tending her flowers.She is survived by her daughter, Gillian Curran and her husband, Steve, of Berwick; very special daughter-in-law, Kathy Howe-Marsh of Rochester; her two sisters, Ivy and Olive of England; her four grandchildren, Shawn, Tonya, Karen and Michael; 10 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Heather, Meaghan, Jessica, Hannah, Abigail, Haley, Nicholas, Marcy and Steven and four great-great-grandchildren, Payton, Teighan, Madilyn and Lucas; and several nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her beloved son, Thomas and her two brothers, Reggie and Eric.Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Oceanside Healthcare in Hampton for their help and care the past eight years.Visiting hours will be held Friday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave. A graveside service will follow at the Southside Cemetery in Portsmouth.To sign the online guest book visit www.purdyfuneralservice.com.Visit www.fosters.com/obits for an online guest book.
