Retired Colonel U.S. Army EVANS, Ga. - Colonel Vera Nolfe Anderson age 74, wife of Jesse A." Andy" Anderson entered into rest on July 31, 2007 at the Medical College of Georgia after a long battle with ALS. Funeral services will be held on Monday August 6, 2007 at Wesley United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery on October 10, 2007 at 9:00am. In addition to her husband of 23 years, she is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Talley and her husband Arthur Talley Jr. of Limerick, PA, one nephew and five nieces, and two stepchildren. Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by one brother, Joseph Nolfe Jr. Colonel Anderson was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Nolfe of Pennsburg, PA. She was a graduate of Pennsburg High School and Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia, PA. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Colonel Anderson was an Obstetrical Staff Nurse at Chicago Lying-In Hospital, a head and neck surgical nurse at the Veterans Cancer Research Hospital, Chicago, IL., a staff nurse at Germantown Hospital in Philadelphia, PA and American Red Cross Blood Mobile Nurse in PA, New Jersey and Delaware. In 1960 she joined the U.S Army Nurse Corps with her initial introduction at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX. Her assignment as a staff nurse included recovery room and intensive care unit at Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. surgical wards at 121st Evacuation Hospital in Korea. and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, where she served in the Presidential Suite. Col. Anderson was a Army Nurse Corps recruiting counselor in a four state region in southeastern US for three years She later was assigned head nurse in recovery and in intensive care unit at Ireland Army Community Hospital Ft. Knox KY. From 1971 to 1974 at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu , HI, she served as surgical supervisor. While assistant chief director of nursing at Ft. Carson, Colorado Springs, CO she was selected to be chief nurse at Ft. IndianTown Gap Military Reservation PA. This humanitarian relief operation served over 15,000 Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees. Col. Anderson was responsible for setting up the hospital which opened May 25, 1975. While assigned to 2nd General hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, she fulfilled the role of assistant chief nurse. As Colonel she was chief director of nursing at 130th station hospital in Heidelberg,West Germany. Then as a assistant chief nurse at Brook Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX, she collaborated with the University of Texas to provide clinical experience for their under graduate and graduate students. Col. Anderson later was reassigned to Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as Chief Director of Nursing, and then to Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Ft Gordon, Georgia, where she held the same position. Col. Anderson retired after 24 years of service. Her awards and decorations included Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Expert Field Medical Badge, and Military Order of Medical Merit. After retirement Anderson was an Occupational Health Nurse and Safety Officer at Juice Bowl, Lakeland, Fl. Her professional memberships included the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association, the Hahnemann Alumni Association, the Army Nurse Corps Association, and the Women Military Service of America. Anderson was secretary of the Augusta Chapter of MOAA in 2006. She attended Wesley United Methodist Church, Evans GA. Among her many interests were entertaining, cooking, flower arranging and photography. She was also a licensed scuba diver in Hawaii. She had a special passion for all kinds of flowers and plants. Colonel Vera Anderson was extremely devoted to her husband, her family, friends and her country. The family will receive friends Sunday August 5, 2007 at the Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. Platt's Funeral Home, 337 N. Belair Rd.
