HENDERSON, Vera I.April 25, 1921 - July 28, 2013Mom passed away after a long and full life of taking care of her family. She was predeceased by, Gordon, her husband of 58 years. She is survived by her children: Graham (Debra) of Vancouver, Ross (Elaine) of West Vancouver and Barbara (David) of Cobble Hill, grandchildren: Tony, Brian, Michelle (Dave) and Margaux and great- grandchildren: Aiden, Ava and Chantel. She is also survived by her sister Eunice. Vera's parents immigrated from England after the First World War and she was born and raised in Calgary. She was fortunate to visit England in the 1920s with her mother and sister and meet her family. She spent her summers at Sylvan Lake and told numerous stories of a carefree childhood. Vera attended Mount Royal College and made her way to Vancouver to start her career. Sadly, her mother passed away from a stroke and she returned to Calgary to help her father. However, Vera's return allowed her to meet Gordon, Captain with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. They were married in 1950 after a slight delay; Gordon got appendicitis on the eve of the wedding and they were forced to cancel everything for a few weeks. After serving in Korea, Gordon and Vera embarked on an army life of regular moves to different locations. They were twice posted to Europe and moved across Canada several times. Some of her closest friendships were made during those postings. When Gordon retired from the army, Vera once again moved to Vancouver. She watched her children graduate and embark on their own careers. As her grand children came along, "Fran" was always available to help and "Darling" could be counted on to look after them when their parents needed a break. Vera always had aspirations to experience far away places. The homes of her children and grandchildren are adorned with souvenirs from trips to Africa and Europe with her sister Eunice. She took up painting and made crafts for family and friends. In her later years, Gordon suffered from health issues and she was his caregiver as his faculties declined. Vera never complained about her role. She always thought that helping her family was something that she needed to do. As her own health failed, Vera did not complain. She never wanted to be a burden on anyone. She will be forever in our hearts. A private family service has been held.
