COLE, VALERIE ELIZABETH - It is with great sadness that the family announces the unexpected passing of Valerie E. Cole at home in Dipper Harbour on Saturday, April 7, 2007. Born in Saint John on March 10, 1938, she was the youngest daughter of the late Marcel and Hazel (Donovan) Burke. Valerie is survived by her husband, Thomas Albert Cole; three sons, John Thomas (Rowena), James William (Susan), Donald Lawrence (Roxanne); one daughter, Judith Anne (Charles Crawford); eight grandchildren, Cara, Jamie, Christina, Brendan, Michelle, Olivia, Jordan, Mary; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Connor MacFarlane; and several nieces and nephews. Valerie was predeceased by her brother, Herman, and her sister, Shirley. Valerie was born and resided in Saint John until 1985 when she and her husband moved to her home overlooking the bay in Dipper Harbour. For the last twenty years before her retirement in 2000, she was well-known as the cook at the Senior Citizen Center in the City Market. She gave of her time, love, and generosity throughout her life and took every opportunity to show her kindness, especially to the less fortunate. Her kindness extended into the animal world as she could be found every evening feeding the families of raccoons that came to her backdoor. She will be fondly remembered as one of the best cooks in town; her pies, bread and rolls, and her made-from-scratch home cooked meals were always appreciated by family and friends alike. Over the years, she enjoyed bowling, traveling, reading, and her many shopping trips to Bangor. Valerie was loved by all who knew her, and she will be sorrowfully missed by all those she has left behind. The family will receive friends and relatives at Castle "Fallsview Chapel" Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John (634-1701) on Monday April 9, 2007 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday April 10, 2007 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption on Wednesday April 11, 2007 at 12:00 pm. Internment in Holy Cross Cemetery will be followed by a reception at the Fallsview Family Reception Center. Remembrances in memory of Valerie may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
