Obituary of Ulysses-S. Jones


Ulysses S. Jones, of 111 Strawberry Lane, Clemson, husband of Ann Gayle Plummer Jones, died Sept. 11, 2002. He was Professor Emeritus in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences at Clemson University. Born Feb. 14, 1918, in Portsmouth, Virginia, he was the son of the late Ulysses S. Jones and Annie Fraser Jones. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1939 with a BS degree, received his MS from Purdue University in 1942, and Ph.D. in soils from the University of Wisconsin in 1947. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 252nd Coast Artillery in Trinidad BWI and in Italy with the 530th Field Artillery Battalion, assigned to the Fifth Army to give heavy artillery support to the II Corps. His military service continued during the Korean War, where he was a staff officer of the 932nd Field Artillery Battalion, 31st "Dixie" Division. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Jones began his agronomic career as an associate professor at Mississippi State University and was on the staff there from 1948-1953, where he was employed as an agronomist with the Olin Chemical Corporation in Little Rock, Arkansas, and did collateral duty as lecturer in chemistry at Little Rock University. In 1960 he accepted a position as Head of the Department of Agronomy and Soils at Clemson University, remaining in that capacity until the early 1970s. For the next decade, he served as Professor of Agronomy and Soils, retiring in 1982. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, published numerous papers in scholarly journals, chapters in three books and was the author of a textbook Fertilizers and Soil Fertility. As a scientist, lecturer and agronomist, his career took him on various international assignments. He was a Fulbright Professor at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey, at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare and at the Agricultural University in Tartu, Estonia. He directed the Rural Development Institute of Cuttington University near Monrovia, Liberia, evaluated an agricultural project in Bangladesh for the U.N. and FAO and worked with the International Rice Research Institute and the University of the Philippines at Los Banos near Manila. While residing in Turkey, he was a guest lecturer at universities in Tel Aviv and Haifa, Israel. Dr. Jones was an Episcopalian, and a Paul Harris Fellow and Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Clemson. He was a member of the Pendleton Farmers' Society, a former member of the Western Carolina Torch Club in Greenville, and the Clemson Cotillion and Fellowship Clubs. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Josephine Jones Allen, and her husband, Brigadier General (USAF Ret.) John R. Allen of Clemson; a sister, Margaret Jones Owens of Portsmouth, Virginia; brothers, Warren Jones of Niceville, Florida, Bruce Jones of Portsmouth and Richard Jones of Arlington, Virginia; granddaughters, Ann Allen Hollinger and her husband, Scott, of Grapevine, Texas, and Emery Allen DeWitt and her husband, David, of Darlington; and great-grandsons, John Hollinger, Joseph Hollinger, Allen DeWitt and Kemp DeWitt. A memorial service will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Pendleton, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon of Tuesday, Sept. 17th. The family will receive friends at 111 Strawberry Lane, Clemson, following the service. Inurnment will take place in Arlington Cemetery at a later date.
