DURHAM — Tyler J. Smith of Durham, N.H., was called to a greater service by his heavenly father on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010. Taken too soon, he was the beloved son of Jeff and Heather Smith. Tyler recently celebrated his 20th birthday on Oct. 9, and had a larger than life personality. He was as big in stature as he was in personality, affectionately known as "The Big Friendly Giant" — he was our beloved BFG.Tyler attended Oyster River Schools and was an enthusiastic Keene State College (KSC) sophomore. Tyler lead, walked and raised money for Relay for Life cancer research three years in a row during high school. At KSC, Tyler was a proud Executive Board member of the Social Activities Council (SAC) serving as the Student Relations and Security Coordinator. He was so excited to represent his school at an upcoming conference with his other SAC E-Board members. Tyler held work-study positions at the Lloyd P. Young Student Center at the Info Desk and as part of the Tech Crew. He most recently was the Best Man at his brother, Joshua's wedding, an honor he was most proud of.Tyler enjoyed friendships and laughing by a good campfire, skiing, swimming in the Saco River, filming videos, computer tech work, riding his motorcycle, and our traditional New Year's Eve bonfires. Unable to make a frown, Tyler had a contagious smile that could make anyone laugh. Tyler's amazing grace was his ability to befriend all who came to know him. His leadership qualities made him someone people wanted to be with.Family members include his brother, Joshua G. Smith, and his wife, Cate Smith; sister, Courtney E. Smith, and her fiance, Miles Roberge; grandparents, Gerry and Dorothy Smith of Durham, and Marieliese Mihok of New Vernon, N.J.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.A celebration of life will be held at the Durham Community Church, 17 Main St., Durham, on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend. After the service we invite you to join us in the church auditorium for refreshments and fond memories of Tyler. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established in Tyler's memory. Donations should be made payable to Keene State College and sent to: Keene State College, 229 Main St., MS 2701, Keene, NH 03435-2701. Note on check: Tyler Smith Scholarship Fund.Arrangements are under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Ave., Dover.
