Obituary of Thomas-N. -Davis III


Memorial services for Thomas Newman Davis III, M.D., 89, Springfield, Missouri, formerly of West Plains, Missouri, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008, in First Baptist Church, West Plains, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Dr. Davis died Monday, September 8, 2008, in Quail Creek Skilled Nursing Center, Springfield, Missouri. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on August 8, 1919, the only child of Dr. Thomas N. Davis Jr. and Mary Lancaster Davis. He attended Lynchburg Public Schools, Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Lynchburg College and graduated from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1944, with his M.D. From 1946 to 1947, Dr. Davis served in the United States Army Air Force and was a flight surgeon in Puerto Rico. On June 28, 1958, he was married in Chicago, Illinois, to Isabelle Burrus. He lived much of his adult life in the Chicago area, where he trained in psychiatry and began his practice of 45 years in the Chicago area, Farmington, Missouri and Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Dr. Davis was a secular psychiatrist for 33 years and a Christian psychiatrist for 12 years. In June of 1986, Dr. Davis had his Christian life changing experience published in the Southern Medical Journal. He wrote many letters about Christian issues to several newspapers and his book "NO Final Exit" was published in 1992 by the New Puritan Library, Fletcher, North Carolina. Also, he contributed monthly "Comments" to the Paul Revere newspaper of Louisville, Illinois, starting in 1998. In 1998, he began serving as a voluntary Chaplain at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains. Dr. Davis was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Plains where he taught the Bible to senior adults. He was active in the Full Gospel Business Men, Gideon's International and Business Men's Fellowship. Dr. Davis was a member of the Board of Regents of Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, Missouri. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle Davis, Springfield, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southwest Baptist University or a charity of choice, and may be mailed to Robertson-Drago Funeral Home, 211 West Main, West Plains, Missouri 65775.
