Carter, Thomas J. LATHAM Thomas J. Carter, 88, of Latham, died peacefully at Albany Memorial Hospital, Wednesday, May 6, 2009, after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Thomas and Lena (Demarest) Carter of Green Island. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Nellie Agnes Carter; brother, Donald Carter of Fla.; and daughters, Connie Spencer and her husband Brad of Calif. and Patricia Galardy and her husband Dennis of Colonie. He also is survived by his grandsons, Scott Spencer and Jason Galardy and stepdaughters, Marilyn Rose (William) Zocco and Donna Dae (William) Gilchrist. He was predeceased by brothers, James and Raymond. He was employed as a fireman and railroad engineer on the Delaware &amp; Hudson Railroad for 45 years and was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. Tom was a highly decorated veteran serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, including an award he received for a daring rescue when he dove off a moving Navy ship to save a fellow Marine who had fallen overboard and could not swim. Tom loved life and had many interest including flying his own plane doing aerial photography as well as wedding photography. He was an avid fisherman and marksman and enjoyed carpentry in his "hack and whack shop" in the basement of his home. Tom enjoyed his weekly poker games with his friends, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed every day of his long and happy life. Family and friends are invited to gather in Tom's memory at the Schuyler Inn, 575 Broadway, Menands, N.Y. on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to celebrate his life.
