BAIN, Thomas Doolen, 79, of Sebring, Fla., who was born January 26, 1930, died peacefully at home March 8, 2009, after an extended illness. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, at Dowden Funeral Home in Sebring. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Bill Breylinger officiating. Tom was born in Marion, Ohio, to the Iate Thomas D. Bain and Lena L. (Hoover) Bain. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bain; and seven children, 16 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Their son, Ted Bain, and daughters, Snow Kendall and Tammera Jordan, live in Georgia, and Tom' s other children, James Bain, Deborah Strawser, Thomas Bain III and Sharon Keefner, are in Ohio and Michigan. He is also survived by his sisters, Dolores Alexander and Virginia Chaney. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy, Thomas dedicated his career to defending our nation in the aerospace industry. He developed the first fly-by-wire missile guidance system. He managed teams, developing the Hellfire missile system and the anti-laser tracker (ALT) which are still being used in the Persian Gulf by our troops. In the last 10 years, he worked diligently to build safe, decent, affordable housing for the working poor in this community with Highlands County Habitat for Humanity and continued his lifelong passion of researching genealogy. Memorial contributions may be made to Highlands County Habitat for Humanity or Parkinson Research Foundation.
