NEW BRITAIN - Thomas A. St. Onge, Sr., 64, of New Britain, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut at New Britain. He was the husband of Mary Ann (Sladeck) St. Onge, with whom he celebrated 42 years of love and devotion. Thomas was born in Randolph, Vt., on Feb. 15, 1944, one of seven children to the late Arnold and Myra (Bunnell) St. Onge, and was raised in Wallingford, where he attended local schools before going to work at the age of 15 to help support his family. His hard work ethics carried him through 35 years at the former Times Wire and Cable in Wallingford, where he served as a union representative, passionate in fighting for the rights of his fellow members, until his retirement 10 years ago. Upon retiring, Tom made a hobby of traveling throughout the state visiting antique shops and flea markets, creating a vast collection of antique glass. A "social butterfly," Tom made many friends and acquaintances along his many stops. He enjoyed fishing on the Connecticut Shore, cheering on the UConn Women's Basketball team, or sharing one of his many one-liners. Above all, he looked forward to visits from the joy of his life, his granddaughter, Skylar, who helped him endure his many struggles with cheerfulness and optimism. Tom's strength, determination and sense of humor, remain an inspiration to his family and friends, all who will miss him dearly. In addition to his devoted wife, Mary Ann, he leaves his children, Thomas A. St. Onge Jr. of New Britain, Jay F. St. Onge and his wife, Cindy Kosc-St. Onge of Plainville, and Danielle V. Zavatsky and her husband, Frank of Coventry; and was affectionately known as Pops to his "therapist," Skylar Veronica Rose St. Onge; he also leaves his brothers, Louis St. Onge of New Hampshire, Norman St. Onge of Stratford, and Arnold St. Onge, Jr. of Meriden; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Francis James St. Onge and sisters, Ida Gilbeau and Carolyn Camire. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, from 3 to 7 p.m., concluding with a service at 7 p.m., at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St, Plainville. Burial will be held privately. Tom's love for children can be remembered with memorial contributions to the St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
