Theresa Devereaux Pittman, 98, passed away on Aug. 8, 2011. Born May 25, 1913, Theresa lived in Union, N.J., for most of her life. A teacher when World War II was declared, she enlisted and was selected for the Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. In January 1944, she was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy WAVES and taught celestial navigation to aviators at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. At war's end, Theresa returned to teaching fifth grade at Hamilton School, retiring after 35 years with the Union school system. She was a role model and an inspiration throughout her life and will be greatly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her brother, Eugene J. Devereaux of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her children, Jeanne Jo Pittman Reid of Frederica, Del.; Charles W. Pittman of Pahrump, Nev., and, James L. Pittman of Union; grandchildren, Eric and Theresa, and great-grandson, Ian. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene J. and Theresa Schnell Devereaux, and, brother, John P. Devereaux. Services will be private with interment at the Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown, N.J.
