SPRINGFIELD - Thelma Bundy Davis, 97, of Unity, N.H., died May 7, 2010. She was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Burlington, the daughter of Melvin A. and Priscilla (Carter) Bundy. She graduated from Edmunds High School of Burlington in the class of 1930. Following high school, she worked for six years as head bookkeeper and sewing instructor for Singer in Burlington, and three other Vermont branches of Singer. It was during this time that she met and married Homer G. Davis. They lived in Burlington and Charlestown, N.H., before settling in Springfield in 1944. During her youth she was a member of the Methodist Church in Burlington. In later years she was active in the Charlestown Congregational Church and the First Congregational Church of Springfield. She was also a member of the Beatrice Rebekah Lodge of Burlington and continued in the Columbia Rebekah Lodge for many years in Springfield, reaching position of conductor. In 1953, Mrs. Davis worked at Springfield Hospital in the dietary department office and remained in that capacity for several years. She also worked at Idlenot Restaurant in Springfield, where she received an American Dietetic Association Certificate. In 1964, she relocated to New York City, where she was employed at the Webster Apartments for Women on 34th Street as a food supervisor to the 400 residents. She furthered her education in nutrition at the New York Institute of Dietetics, graduating in 1969. Upon graduation she took the first of three extended European holidays over her lifetime. After a short period of employment at B. Altmans of NYC, she served as personal nutritionist and bookkeeper to The Wagstaffs of N.Y. and Maine. Mrs. Davis retired at age 69 and moved to the William's Residence, continuing to enjoy her favorite pastimes of Broadway Shows, ice skating in Rockefeller Center, contract Bridge with friends and attending Marble Collegiate Church to hear Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. As a cancer survivor, Mrs. Davis returned to Springfield in 1985 to pursue a quiet life in the family home, and enjoyed walks, reading, crossword puzzles, current events, and reciting her favorite poems, hymns and scripture. For the past five years, she was a resident of Sullivan County Healthcare in Unity, N.H.Survivors include three of her four children: Carol Von Maluski of Hendersonville, N.C., Russell Davis of Unity, N.H., and Barbara Antoniewich of Nashua, N.H.; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Davis was predeceased by her children's father; a daughter, Betsy Neuhaus; brothers Dean, Warren, Donald, and Leon Bundy; and sisters, Doris Grandmaisson and Gladys Collins. At Mrs. Davis' request, there will be no formal memorial service. She will be buried next to her parents in Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington, at the convenience of the family.
