The-Reverend-Canon-John-M. Flynn, born in 1924, spouse of Elizabeth Hess, son of Egbert and Alma-Miriam, father of Annetta Flynn and John, died on June 18, 1924. Please consult the obituary here:
FLYNN The Reverend Canon John M. Flynn was born on June 18, 1924 in Brooklawn, New Jersey. He was the eldest son of Egbert Joseph and Alma Miriam Flynn. He served his country proudly during World War II as a US Navy pilot in the South Pacific theatre. He was involved in the search and rescue efforts for the crew of the USS Indianapolis when it was torpedoed and sunk. He also delivered documents to General MacArthur at the signing of the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay. Returning to Jacksonville after the war, he and his sweetheart were married - a marriage lasting 61 years. Many men of Jacksonville will remember "Coach" Flynn as a model of trust, kindness, and good fun when he was director of the outdoor Boys Clubs. He, himself, was mentored by Judge Walter Scott Criswell and became executive director of the Boys Service Council after the death of Judge Criswell. This was an 18 year career in social work with the Boys Club and the Big Brother programs. This was before the advent of the National Organization in the Jacksonville area. At the age of 39 he became the oldest member of the freshman class at St. Luke's Seminary at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. After seminary graduation, he was ordained deacon and six months later, to the priesthood. He served his entire ministry in the Diocese of Florida, retiring from St. John's Cathedral. He was later named Canon Emeritus there for his priestly character and endeavors. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Hess) Flynn; his son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Jenell Flynn of Jacksonville; a son-in-law, Frank Cogdell of Virginia; his brother, Fred Flynn (Miriam) of Pennsylvania; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Mitchell and Laurie Flynn. His daughter Annetta Flynn Cogdell preceded him in death. Special mention should be made to Jackie Austin for her loving care and help for many months. Memorial services will be Tuesday, February 6, 11AM, at St. John's Cathedral with the Very Reverend Edward Harrison officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made in his name to St. John's Cathedral for Camp Weed Scholarships. Burial of ashes will be in the Bishops Garden at St. John's Cathedral. Arrangements are under the direction of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME, 4315 Main Street. Please Sign the Guestbook @ Jacksonville.com
