The Rev. Lee Jones was born October 6, 1926, in Evans County, (Bellville) Ga., and was the second child of six children to the late Albert "A.B" Jones and Ezia Butts Jones. He entered into eternal rest on June 2, 2008, in Statesboro at Ogeechee Area Hospice. Lee attended the public schools and graduated from Evans County High School. He attended Savannah Tech, where he was certified as an electrician; received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Savannah State University and a Master of Divinity from Emory University in Atlanta. He was a member of Palen United Methodist Church in Savannah. He served in the U.S. Army overseas in the Korean War. Lee was active in the Black Methodist for Church Renewal organization (BMCOR), where he received numerous awards. He was a charted member of the Gladiators, where he served as president for many years. Lee was also a Mason. He was licensed as a United Methodist minister in 1971 and ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1978. During his ministerial career, he served the following churches: Reidsville Circuit, St. Andrews/Horse Creek, Speedwell UMC, Savannah, Statesboro Circuit and Nepsey/Warren. For five years he served as chaplain at the Dublin V.A. Medical Center. In 1990, the Rev. Jones was appointed by Bishop Richard C. Looney as the first African-American District superintendent in the South Georgia Conference. He served faithfully for six years as district superintendent of the Statesboro District. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Wilma Mobley Jones; two brothers, the Rev. Lloyd Jones and Robert Jones; and one sister, Jaunita Benjamin. He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Jones; and three daughters, Faye Ketch, Augusta, Freddie Baldridge (Rivers), Cleveland, Ohio, and Robin (Torre) Davis of Elkridge, Md.; one son, Robert "Bobby" (Wanda) Jones of Douglasville, Ga. He was also blessed with children, Flecia (Gary) Mosley, Daryl Lewis Mosley (Nikki), Reuben (Nacardia) Lewis III. Lee leaves a beloved spouse, Mrs. Mary Louise Jones of Collins, Ga.; two sisters, Luretha Tillman and Nita B. Baker, both of Claxton; and sister-in-law, Thelma Jones of Macon; one brother, the Rev. Lloyd Jones of Dublin, Ga.; sister-in-law, Bernice (the Rev. J.D. Upshaw), of Columbus Ga.; two goddaughters, Audrey Lewis (Quelman), Patricia Peeples (Aaron); nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Visitation and Service of Remembrance will be held at the Reidsville United Methodist Church on Wednesday, June 4, from 6-8 pm. with the Rev. Thomas Norman III presiding. A repast will follow in the Reidsville Fellowship Hall. The funeral service will be held at Pittman Park United Methodist Church on Thursday, June 5, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jimmy Cason presiding and the Rev. Joseph Robertson, eulogist. Interment: Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Groveland, Ga., with repast following.
