MELBOURNE, Fla. - Teresa "Terry" passed away peacefully at her home in Melbourne, FL, at 2:03 p.m., August 12, 2013, with her family at her bedside. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on February 22, 1927, the eldest daughter of John and Mary McVey, who had a clan of nine. She is survived by her eldest brothers respectively, John, Paul and Michael; and her younger sisters, Bernadette, Margaret, Susan and Cecelia. Her parents immigrated to New Jersey when she was a child. Terry settled in Vermont with her husband and together had four sons and one daughter. Her husband, Raymond Downs and eldest son, Raymond Downs, Jr. both died in 1974. She is survived by her three sons: Steven, William and Thomas and her daughter, Cathy and her husband, Robert Ross; two daughters-in-laws: Marge Downs and Kimberly Downs; seven grandchildren; Sean, Stevie and his wife Lauren, Lauren and her husband Jack, Katie and her husband Jason, Morgan, Shelby and Audrey; and seven great-grandchildren. Terry was very proud of her Scottish heritage and loved Vermont, as it reminded her of the Highlands. She instilled in us all the importance of family. Her strength and grace were evident to everyone who knew her. Terry was fortunate enough to have found "the love of her life" with Robert D. Smith, who passed away January 14, 2010. Together they built a beautiful life in Rutland, VT, and became "snowbirds" in 1976, and settled in Melbourne, Florida, during the winters. Together they danced, loved and lived life to the fullest. Terry will forever be remembered for her generous, loving spirit and will be missed by everyone whose path she crossed and lives she touched. Terry's wishes and final request was to have a Memorial Mass Service in Vermont during foliage and be put to rest with her husband Robert. In honor of our beloved Teresa, a Mass will be celebrated in her memory Saturday, October 12, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Saint Alphonsus Parish Catholic Church, in Pittsford, Vermont. The Mass will be led by Father Michael Ramos, the parish priest. The burial is after the Mass at Cheney Hill Cemetery in Rutland Town. A reception to celebrate the life of Terry will be held at the Italian American Club in Rutland at 1:30 p.m. All arrangements are being made by Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland, VT.
