Thomas Montgomery "Tom" Henderson, a long time resident of the Overbrook Community, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009.Mr. Henderson was 95 years old. Mr. Henderson was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Nona Lee "Jackie" Henderson, in 1992. Mr. Henderson was the son of the late Arthur Mooney Henderson and Blanche Traynham Henderson.He was a member of Overbrook Baptist Church and a member of the Hubert Nolan Sunday School class. He was retired bus driver and served for 37 years with City Coach Lines, which provided bus service to the City of Greenville for many years. Mr. Henderson was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 812th Ordinance Company in Germany. Mr. Henderson was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been predeceased by two brothers, William Arthur Henderson and Dewey Ralph Henderson and by two sisters, Sara Stephens and Madge Greene Carithers. He is survived by six nieces, Sara Francis Hughes of Laurens, Jeanette Patterson of Greenville, Kathy Case of Fountain Inn, Caroline Brown of Simpsonville, Norma Greene of Greenville and Dannette Greene of Taylors; four nephews, David J. Greene of Greenville, Bill Greene of Taylors, Frank Stephens of North Carolina and Charles Owens of Greenville, as well as a very special friend, Ms. Hattie Willimon of Berea, and numerous loving grand nieces and nephews. Until he moved to Pendleton Manor in 2002, Mr. Henderson had been a resident of historic Overbrook Community for over 60 years. He was well known in his community, especially to the senior citizens as a good neighbor and close friend. Mr. Henderson could always be seen carrying neighbors to doctor's appointments, grocery store or pets to vets appointments or working on the vehicles of most the community's senior citizens. Tom Henderson will truly be missed by his family, friends, neighbors and by all those that had the pleasure of knowing this Christian gentleman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Overbrook Baptist Church, 1705 E. North Street, Greenville, SC 29615 or Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 13, 2009, from 12 to 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the downtown chapel with the Reverend Dale Sutton officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will be at their respective homes.
