Sylvia Virginia Smith November 2, 1935 - May 18, 2014 Byron, GA- Sylvia Virginia Smith died Sunday, May 18, 2014, after a long and hard battle with cancer. Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM, on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in Jordan Chapel Cemetery on Giles Road near Byron, with Rev. Tyler Plaxico officiating. Visitation will be Monday, May 19, 2014, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM, at Rooks Funeral Home, 109 West White Road in Byron. Born in Byron to the late Artis and Virginia Jordan Smith, Miss Smith graduated from Byron High School in 1953 and retired from Robins Air Force Base in 1988, after thirty four years of service. A member of Byron United Methodist Church, Byron United Methodist Genesis Choir, and Byron United Methodist Women, she served many years as pianist for Hardison Baptist Church and Jordan Chapel United Methodist Church. Survivors include sisters, Violet Graham (Joe) and Scarlett Bassett, both from Byron; nieces, Virginia Graham of Smoke Rise, and Layne Graham of Macon; nephews, Mark Bassett (Joy), and Lee Bassett (Lynn), both of Byron, and Albert Bassett (Melissa) of Cleveland . She was also very much loved and will be greatly missed by her great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sylvia Smith Memorial Fund at Byron United Methodist Church, 103 West Heritage Blvd., Byron, GA 31008, or to the charity of donor's choice.
