Sylvia Smith, born in 1939, spouse of Marion Smith, daughter of Harold and Thelma-L. -Fassett, mother of Gerald D. Richards and Scott, died on November 20, 2005 at 66 years old.
Sylvia A. Resue Richards Age 66, of Painted Post, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2005, at Corning Hospital. Sylvia was born November 1, 1939 in Corning, NY, the daughter of the late Harold C. and Thelma L. Fassett Resue. She graduated from Corning Free Academy. Sylvia had worked for the Horseheards School District and later for Corning Building Company. She was a member and had many friends at the First Baptist Church in Painted Post and the Senior Trust Group at Corning Senior Center. Sylvia battled and survived breast cancer and was engaged in a new battle with lung and brain cancer. She will be remembered as a friend and caregiver for those less fortunate than herself. Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Marion Smith in 1998; a son, Scott Richards in 2005; and a brother, Ronald Resue. Surviving are her son, Gerald D. Richards Jr. of Elmira Heights; stepsons, Larry (Ann) Smith of Campbell, Darrell (Linda) Smith of KY; stepdaughter, Kathleen McGannon of FL; sister, Jeanene (Bill) Stiles of NC; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) DeWert of Lindley, Chad Richards of Elmira Heights, Valire Richards of NC; several step grandchildren, as well as many close friends. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, November 23, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning. A memorial service will be held at the conclusion of visitation at 8 p.m. A graveside service will be in Coopers Cemetery on Saturday, November 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. Those wishing may direct memorial donations to Guthrie Cancer Treatment Center, 114 Chemung St., Corning, NY 14830.
