Obituary of Susan-Lorraine Anderson

When someone you love becomes a memory, The memory becomes a treasure. – Anon.Susan Lorraine Anderson, born June 18, 1948 in Calgary, Alberta, passed away Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011 at Delta Hospital after a brief but brave battle with cancer. She kept her trademark sense of humour, strength of character and love for her family till the end, and her spirit and optimism in the face of her unexpected illness will remain an inspiration to all those who knew her. Susan grew up in Dunbar, with parents Margaret and Leonard Day and sister Val. She attended UBC where she obtained a teaching degree with a specialty in music.. She started her career in Burnaby but taught at a number of Tsawwassen schools, spending the majority of her career at Beach Grove Elementary. Known to hundreds of students over the years as simply "Mrs. Anderson," she was recognized in 2003 with a Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching along with colleague Susan Earles, for their efforts in researching and creating extensive curriculum material on the history of the Tsawwassen area, covering early pioneer efforts, the Ladner family and local First Nations groups. She leaves behind husband of 29 years Gordon Anderson, of the Delta Police Department (retired); daughter Julie Wigley, son-in-law Ross Wigley, and much-loved granddaughters Taylor and Mackenzie; son Tim and partner Vanessa; and sister Val, niece and nephews Tyler, Daniela, and Michael, many dear friends in B.C., and across the country, and long-time neighbours in the community. In keeping with Susan's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Immediate family celebrated her life during a gathering on Sunday, Oct. 2, in Tsawwassen, her dearly loved hometown for nearly 40 years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Agency.
