Obituary of Susan Gray

GRAY--Susan, passed away on April 23, 2008 in Santa Fe, New Mexico after a courageous seven-year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she began painting as a child. She studied at the Art Students League and Skidmore College and then later at New York University. For fifteen years, Susan and her lifepartner painter Steven Baumann lived in a remote Mediterranean fishing village in southern Spain. Their life revolved around their shared passion for painting and the beauty of the native landscape and culture. Susan's beloved Spanish home had an inescapable influence on her work and her images. The two frequently exhibited in two-person shows and painted together on a single canvas. Anyone who knew Susan knew her immeasurable capacity to create beauty. It was evident in her exquisite landscapes and still-lifes and in virtually everything she touched. Susan is mourned by her partner Steven, her mother Clara Mirkin, son Jonathan and daughter Melissa; her sister Naomi; niece Linda and nephew Jack; her cousin Lucy and many beloved relatives, friends and patrons everywhere who hold her graceful spirit and poetic paintings close to their hearts. Contributions in her name may be sent to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, or The Arts Students League of New York.
