She was born at Athens, Georgia on January 9, 1902, and at the time of her death at age 111 was believed to be the oldest living person in South Carolina.Mrs. Sanders was the daughter of William Walter Keown and Sue Mattison Keown. She was predeceased by her parents; by her husband of nearly fifty years, Harvey G. Sanders, Sr.; by her sisters, Lucille Keown Brown and Mamie Keown Price; and by her brothers, William Warren Keown and James Alexander Keown.Mrs. Sanders is survived by her two children, Anne Sanders Wilson of Woodruff, South Carolina, and Harvey G. Sanders, Jr., of Greenville, South Carolina; by six grandchildren, Lisa Anne Wilson of Woodruff, South Carolina; Daniel Steele Wilson, Stephen Sanders Wilson and Suzanne Sanders Putnam, all of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Barry Langley Sanders of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; and Rev. Harvey G. Sanders, III (Bert) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.Mrs. Sanders was a 1921 graduate of Georgia State Teachers College, Athens, Georgia, and an extremely popular school teacher (primarily first grade). She taught school in Athens, Georgia; Salisbury, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; and McCormick, South Carolina (where she met and married the love of her life, Harvey Sanders). She was honored on several occasions at class reunions by her former students and their families. She was a talented artist and throughout her life produced many paintings which are still treasured and displayed by family and friends.In addition to her activities as a teacher, artist, and homemaker, Mrs. Sanders was involved in church and civic activities. She was a member of First Baptist Church of McCormick, South Carolina. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution from which she received regional honors in recognition of her long and effective service. On the occasion of her 110th birthday on January 9, 2012, in recognition of her outstanding services to her state and community, she was presented a Certificate of Honor and Commendation by the South Carolina House of Representatives, wherein several of the historical highlights she witnessed during her lifetime were enumerated and she was stated to be the oldest member of the South Carolina Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an active member of the Long Cane Chapter of the DAR for 38 years.Mrs. Sanders was a person of high energy and great patience. Her thirst for knowledge, love of history and learning, remarkable memory, and genuine interest in others made her a special person, and undoubtedly contributed to her long life. She saw Halley's Comet twice, and lived through the Great Depression and two world wars. She saw and absorbed much. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at McCormick First Baptist Church on Oak Street in McCormick, South Carolina, followed by a Memorial Service at the church at 2:00 p.m., to be conducted by Rev. Dennis Lynn. Burial will follow the service in McCormick City Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to McCormick First Baptist Church or to one's favorite charity.The family wishes to extend special thanks to Lucille Evans, Lynn Burnett, and Carlotta Glenn, who provided loving care and encouragement to Mrs. Sanders during the past several years, as well as to the staff of Skylyn Place at Spartanburg, South Carolina.Strom Funeral Home is in charge of the Arrangements.
