Sr. Jane Miller, SSJ, 83, of St. Augustine, Fla., and Crescent City, Fla., died Sept. 15, 2010, at Bay View in St. Augustine. She was born Emma Genevieve (Jane) Miller to George and Emma Miller on April 7, 1927, in Crescent City. She was baptized at St. John the Baptist in Crescent City, where Jane experienced the beginnings of God's call.Jane began high school as a boarding student at St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine. It was there that she heard and answered God's call to "cross the porches" and, in 1945, entered the sisters of St. Joseph. Known as Sr. Mary George, she began her teaching career, leading myriad students through Latin declensions, historical anecdotes, vocal scales, and hours of practices for operetta and Broadway musical productions.Sister received her B.A. in music and education from Medaille College, Buffalo, N.Y., and at the same time her M.A. in liturgical studies from Notre Dame University. Sister continued advancing in her religious studies. She became credentialed as a Catholic chaplain through Hermann Hospital and Mayo Clinic. Sister's Ecumenical involvement led Sister Jane to embrace a broader scope of mission, leading her ministry with unwed mothers, the elderly, the homeless and prison ministry. Sister always acknowledged the Eucharist, sacred scripture, communal and personal prayer, contemplation, journaling and interpersonal relationships as her sustaining sources for her years of religious life. She sought to live out a ministry of mutuality that gave empowerment. Sister Jane spent the past few years back home in Crescent City in ministry as a volunteer chaplain at Land of Lakes Hospice. Fridays, you would find her in St. Augustine teaching scripture classes to our senior sisters and serving as a guide at the O'Reilly House/Museum. The words on her Silver Jubilee card (1977) read: "Do Everything with Love."Sister Jane Miller, our former Sr. Mary George, served in Florida and beyond. As an educator she brought her energies and enthusiasm to students at St. Agnes and St. Joseph Academy (St. Augustine), St. Theresa and Notre Dame Academy (Miami), Bishop Moore High School (Orlando), St. Paul and Bishop Kenny High School (Jacksonville), and St. Joseph Colleh (Jensen Beach). Her ministries were certainly broadened by her extensive education. Her ecumenical studies led her to ministries in Stuart and Port St. Lucie as full-time director of religious education, Beta House Counseling (Orlando), Epiphany Parish DRE (Lake City), Catholic Student Campus ministry (Gainesville), on Secour Nursing Home Pastoral Care (Miami) and St. John the Baptist Parish ministry (Crescent City). Sister served as co-vicar for religious in the Orlando Diocese and as director of Mission Catholic Health Services in the Archdiocese of Miami.Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, with the Very Rev.
