Sr. James Joseph Kelly, OP, of Cooke Community, 1330 Hobart Ave., Bronx, NY, died January 31, 2003 in Siena Hall Infirmary, Dominican Convent, 175 Route 340, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York City on August 7, 1930, Dorothy was the daughter of James and Della Fay Kelly. Dorothy entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1948, and became known as Sister James Joseph, professing her first vows in 1950 and her final vows in 1955. Sister James Joseph earned a BS in Education from Fordham University in 1956 and an MA in Reading from Manhattan College in 1974. She received a second MA in 1982 from Fordham University in Administration and Supervision. During her professional life, Sister James Joseph taught elementary school and was a Principal in the Archdiocese of New York and in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Sister James Joseph is survived by her brother John, his wife, Joan, their daughters Carol and Patricia and many close friends and colleagues. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY, Monday, February 3, 2003 at 10:30 AM. Visitation is on Sunday, February 2, 2003 from 3:30 to 8:30 at the Convent, 125 Rte. 340, Sparkill, NY. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Sparkill. Arrangements are by Higgins Funeral Home.
