Leon C. Van Horn, Sr., 89, formerly of Trenton and Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Francis in Trenton.Born and raised in Trenton, Leon lived most of his life there before moving to Port St. Lucie, Fla.with his wife Edith. He attended Trenton Catholic High School and was one of the few remaining members of the Golden Wave. Leon was a decorated veteran of World War II having served as a medic in the U.S. Navy. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service, Leon worked at Trenton State College as the equipment manager for the athletic department. Sports were his lifelong avocation. As a member of the Delaware Valley Softball/Baseball Umpires Association, Leon was a well-known umpire throughout Mercer County. He was also an official with the NJSIAA Soccer Association. Later in life, his sports enthusiasm could always be found and heard on the sidelines of his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's basketball, soccer and baseball games as they continue the family's athletic tradition.Leon now joins his beloved wife, Edith, who died in November, 2006. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Claire and Bill Tindall, daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim Eldracher, son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Joanne Van Horn, and his daughter, Maureen Van Horn and her partner, Cindy Westhead. He was so proud of his six grandchildren and their spouses, Bill and Leighann Tindall, David and Laurie Tindall, Michael Eldracher and fiancée Jessica More, Katie and Ed Lyon, Leon and Kate Van Horn and Allison and Matthew Sokorai.He also leaves nine great-grandchildren, Cory, Derek, Camryn, Dominick and Nicholas Tindall, Emma Eldracher, Cale Lyon and Haidyn and Holden Sokorai, and one great-grandchild due in January.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2012, at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 3816 East State Street Extension, Mercerville. Interment at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Saul Colonial Home. www.saulfuneralhomes.com.
