Sister Mary Laurence Hanley December 2, 2011 Sister Mary Laurence, 86, embraced death on Friday, December 2, 2011, at Jolenta Convent. She was born in Syracuse, NY, to Anthony and Madalen Bukowsky Hanley. She was a Sister of St. Francis for 67 years. Sister received a bachelor's degree from Le Moyne College, a master's degree from Catholic University in Washington, DC, and an honorary doctorate from Le Moyne College. During her educating career, she taught grammar school in the states of New York and New Jersey. She also taught at Assumption High School, Convent School, Oswego Catholic High School and at Maria Regina College. For 37 years, she had devoted her skills, talents and energies as the director of the Cause of Blessed Mother Marianne Cope. She has brought this Cause full circle from the beginning of the study of Mother's life work to getting the Cause presented before the cardinals and Pope in Rome. Sister has pursued in getting the process of Mother Marianne canonized as a Saint of the Catholic Church. Sister will always be remembered for her many years of devoted service to her community. She will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her as an excellent educator. She was well-read, well-versed and was one who had the ability to communicate comfortably with persons of all levels and walks of life. She was a unique historian and very particular of the events surrounding the main historical event at hand. Sister co-authored the book A Song of Pilgrimage and Exile, a history of the life of Mother Marianne in Hawaii. No one would be able to think of Blessed Marianne without associating the name of Sister Mary Laurence Hanley. For this contribution of her time, treasure and talents we will always be most grateful. She is survived by a brother, Robert (Barbara) Hanley; several nephews; and her Sisters of St. Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 7 p.m. WEDNESDAY, December 7, 2011, at St. Anthony Convent. Visitation on WEDNESDAY in the St. Anthony Convent Solarium will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. A farewell service will be 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the St. Anthony Convent Chapel.
