Hayes, Sister Mary Ann CSJ LATHAM, N.Y. Sister Mary Ann Hayes, CSJ, (Sister Karen Francis), 74, died Monday, July 19, 2010, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Sister Mary Ann had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 54 years. Sister Mary Ann was born in Cortland, N.Y., on May 4, 1936, daughter of the late John and Anna McGuire Hayes. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Cortland, Sister Mary Ann attended The College of Saint Rose, Albany. On March 19, 1956, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Sister Mary Ann received a bachelor's degree in social studies and a master's degree in history/political science, both from The College of Saint Rose; a bachelor's degree in canon law (BCL), a master's degree in canon law (MCL) and a licentiate in canon law (LCL), all from University of Ottawa/Saint Paul University. Sister Mary Ann taught for 10 years in high schools in the Albany and Syracuse Dioceses. In addition, she served for 12 years at The College of Saint Rose as an academic counselor, assistant registrar and assistant professor of history/political science. Sister Mary Ann also was assistant novice director and assistant provincial superior for the Sisters of St. Joseph. At the time of her death, she was in her 21st year as a judge and defender of the bond in the Diocese of Albany's Office of Canonical Services. Sister Mary Ann was a woman of keen intellect, gentle grace and sterling character. She was a friend whose loyalty was constant, a sister and an aunt whose love was unflagging, a Sister of St. Joseph whose faithfulness was unshakeable. She was a good listener who paid careful attention to detail and extended wise counsel succinctly and compassionately. Her analytical skills and organizational prowess were complemented by her unusual ability to see people clearly, without judgment or projection. Sister Mary Ann's ministry as a judge in the marriage tribunal was directed by a well-balanced combination of juridical expertise and reconciling, pastoral guidance. The same integrity and strength that characterized Sister Mary Ann's life marked her brief journey through death, a challenge she met with forthrightness and dignity. Sister Mary Ann spent her life bettering the world, and we will miss her dearly. Sister Mary Ann is survived by her beloved family, her sisters, Katharine (James) Gaul of Liverpool, and Constance (Edward) Lewison of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.; her sister-in-law, Donna Hayes of Cortland; by several nieces and nephews and their families; by many faithful friends, with special mention of Sisters Rita Haber, Ann Christi Brink, Serena Thompson and Rev. Peter J. Sullivan III; by the sisters with whom she lived, Sisters Patricia Conron, Kathleen Connor and Rose Regina Smith; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, Sister Mary Ann was predeceased by her dear brother, John J. Hayes; and by many friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Mary Ann's funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, July 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds.
