Bernadette Smith January 25, 2008 Sister Marie Bernadette Smith, 66, of Syracuse, New York, died Friday, January 25, 2008, at Jolenta Convent, Syracuse, NY, after a long illness. Sister was born in Syracuse, NY, to the late Clifford and Mary Alice Lamb Smith, from St. Daniel Parish. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on February 2, 1958, and professed Final Vows on August 14, 1965. Sister studied at Maria Regina College. Sister served in Community Ministry for five years at St. Anthony Convent in Syracuse before her assignment to Stella Maris Retreat Center in 1964. For 36 years Sister became a familiar, joyful face to people in all walks of life as she served at Stella Maris in various ministries. In 2000, Sister returned to St. Anthony Convent for a short time before retiring at Jolenta Convent. She was a regular, delightful visitor, with her faithful companion, "Mina," to the residents and staff at Francis House and will be remembered by many. Sister is survived by a sister, Barbara (Rudy) Kobelia of Homer, NY; a brother, James E. (Valerie) Smith of Los Angeles, CA; a niece, Janet Smith; nephews, Jeffrey and Stephen Smith and Keith and Jason Kobelia; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and her Sisters in Community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 7 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2008, at St. Anthony Convent Chapel at 1024 Court St., Syracuse, NY. Burial in Assumption Cemetery will follow an 8:30 a.m. Farewell Service on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, in St. Anthony Convent chapel.
