TURNER, Shirley A. (nee Eichorst)September 29, 1937 – October 29, 2012On Monday, October 29, 2012 Shirley A. Turner passed away at Norwood Palliative Care Hospice. She is survived by her husband Philip E. Turner, sisters Esther, Dorothy and Margie, sons Robert and Darrell, daughters Janet and Connie, grandchildren Valerie, Troy, Tabitha, Dylan and Rachel, great- grandchildren Rebekah, Faith and Kaitlynn. Predeceased by brothers Elmer and Wilfred.Shirley was born to Theodore and Lydia Eichorst, in the district of Esk, Saskatchewan, on September 29, 1937. She obtained junior grades at Brindle School and Pauline School. She went on to be employed at the University of Saskatchewan Hospital in Saskatoon as a ward aide, then took her Registered Nursing Aide training, graduating with honours in 1958. Shirley resumed employment at the U of S Hospital for one year and then left for Edmonton, Alberta. Following arrival in Alberta, she completed her matriculation and studied Arts and Science for two years, and in 1979 entered the University of Alberta Hospital's School of Nursing. She graduated in February 1981 as a Registered Nurse. Shirley's nursing career included various nursing homes in Edmonton and then in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1998 - 1999. In 1969 she married Philip Turner, who was employed with Canadian National Railways from 1948 - 1986, in Edmonton.Shirley worked with 19 community leagues for the Neighbourhood Watch Program where she instructed and trained people in this program in various Edmonton communities. Shirley enjoyed the outdoors, attending to the many beautiful rose bushes that surrounded the house she lived in with her husband Philip for many years. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church which Philip also attended.Shirley wished to bequeath her body for anatomical studies thereby making a lasting contribution to the advancement of medical sciences. A funeral service will not be held. A memorial service may be held at a later date.
