ObituaryShirley Jean Johnson, age 77, a resident of S.W. Florida since 1957 died September 13, at Intergrated Health Services, Fort Myers. Shirley was born in Flint, MI on July 26, 1924. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in Pensacola where she served as an Aviation Machinist Mate. After her honorable discharge from the Navy, Shirley has enjoyed many vocations in her life. However, long time area residents will remember Shirley as owner and operator of an A&W Rootbeer stand in Bonita Springs, Lee District School Bus Drive, Manger of Everglades Bowling Lanes and Manger of an Aveaire. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Fort Myers and a member of the American Legion. Shirley is survived by two sons, Rev. Budd R. (wife Susan) Johnson of Bonita Springs, FL and Donald R. (wife Janine) Johnson of West Cartage, NY; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Three sisters, Beverly (husband Ernie) Bennett of Battle Creek, MI, Janeth Tichenor of Odessa, FL and Bonnie (husband Donald) Giles of Albuquerque, NM and two brothers Arthur (wife Andree) Long of Woodruff, SC and Robert (wife Joyce) Long of Battle Creek, MI. She was preceded in death by her second son, George D. Johnson, USMC, who died in March 1967 serving his country in Viet Nam and a brother, Jimm Long. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 5:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Edison and Grand Avenues in Fort Myers. Memorial gifts may be made to the Memorial Fund of Central United Methodist Church or to your local hospice.
