Obituary of Shirley-Anne-Palmer Flanagan

OBITUARY SHIRLEY ANNE PALMER FLANAGAN December 7, 1929 - September 13, 2005 Shirley Flanagan died of cancer at Knowlton House on Sept. 13, 2005. Shirley was born in Germany to Jerry and Max Palmer. Shirley and her sister Mary Lou grew up in a variety of countries as her father was a Canadian Trade Commissioner. The two girls attended Ontario Ladies College as boarders, and Shirley went on to complete a degree in Home Economics at Macdonald College, where she met her future husband, Peter Flanagan. After running the family farm in Arundel for seven years, during which Michael, Patti, Kevin and Neil were born, the family moved to Rosemere, where Maureen was born. Throughout her life, sports played an important part. She loved tennis, golf and curling. The family spent their summers at the Lakehouse on Beavens Lake, surrounded by dozens of cousins, aunts and uncles. Shirley embraced the clan, bringing her own contribution of humour, good nature, and sense of fun. Stained glass, paintings, and a pipe-cleaner mobile of all the children are a continuing reminder of her creativity and love of the Lakehouse. Shirley left Rosemere when her children were grown and lived and worked for a while in Montreal. She then moved back to Arundel for several years where she maintained a small stained-glass studio. Her last ten years were spent in Knowlton where her good nature touched many in the community. During the past two years as she lived with cancer and the loss of her son, Kevin, she remained connected to her interests and her world. Her love of life, determination, and her innate sense of humour, sustained her and the people who loved her. Shirley has been wonderfully supported by her children and their families, as well as by the larger family and friends she loved so much. Crossword buffs: what is an eleven-letter word describing Shirl's spirit? Donations in her memory may be made to the BMP Foundation, 950 rue Principale, Cowansville, QC, J2K 1K3. www.bmpfoundation.ca . Graveside service in Arundel October 2 at 2 p.m.
