Shelton Thomas Hayes, 56, a legendary music icon and entertainment/club industry giant and a lifelong resident of Newark, N.J., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 20, 2010, after a valiant battle, surrounded by family and friends. A celebration of his life and legacy will be at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 28, from First Corinthian Missionary Baptist Church, 470 18th Avenue at South 10th Street, Newark, where the family will receive relatives and friends from 4 p.m. until time of services. Arrangements are entrusted to Woody "Home For Services," Orange. An honorably discharged sailor in the US Navy, Shelton managed one of the most popular night clubs on the East coast, Club Zanzibar. He also received accolades for his role in the second annual Lincoln Park music festival. Shelton was a board member as well as very strong advocate for diabetes and HIV/AIDS education and prevention. Mr. Hayes was the loving father of Shelton and Taryn Hayes. He is also survived by other relatives and friends.
