(Bobby) Carter passed away on Monday morning at the age of 75, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson. His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Gardner's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia, with Josh Johnson and Bob Simpson officiating. Members of his family will serve as Pallbearers. He was born on October 7, 1939 in Scott County, Virginia, the son of the late Rev. Robert Todd and Estelle Pippin Carter. He earned all-state honors in basketball at Virginia High School, and went on to star at the University of Tennessee. Carter graduated with a Master's in Education, then taught and coached at Beaver High School in Beaver, PA, Humboldt High School in Humboldt, TN and Union University in Jackson. He later had a successful career with the Coca-Cola Bottling Works in Jackson, from which he retired as Executive Vice-President. Mr. Carter was actively involved in the Jackson community, working with uncounted education, health, and children's causes. He was instrumental in the founding of the Episcopal Day School, where both of his children attended, and he volunteered as basketball coach for several years. Among many honors, he was the Exchange Club's Man of the Year in Jackson in 1986.In 1994, he was elected to the Tennessee State Senate, representing District 27. He served two terms, earning a reputation for integrity and commitment.His highest calling was his service to the Lord. He faithfully served for 32 years as pastor of Gardner's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, the church his father founded in Bristol. He is survived by his daughter, Genny Lee Carter; his son, Russ Carter (Krista); their mother, his former wife, Pauline Taber Carter; two grandchildren, Lauren and Chris; and a great-granddaughter, Kinsley. He also leaves four loving sisters, Betty Sue Schaughency, PhD. (Bob), Mary Lou Smith (Don), Sara Hue Odum, Estelle "Cookie" Johnson (Frank), and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Juanita Copenhaver Carter; stepsister, Libby Copenhaver; brother-in-law, Don Odum; nephew, Bart Smith and grandson, Adam Russell Carter. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 8 from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson and on Friday, January 9 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m., at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol. They are deeply grateful for loving care provided through the years by Junior, Faye, Lawrence, Susie, Nick, Bill, David, Anna and the staff of Aseracare.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, the Bobby Carter House of the Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism (JACOA), West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation or the charity of your choice.
