Obituary of Schroff-Karl-William Sr

SCHROFF-Karl William Sr., A Leader in the International Trade Community, accomplished everything in his long life that he set out to do. The only son of Norva and Karl George Schroff of Stamford, Connecticut, he was affectionately known to his two older sisters, Lydia and Greta, as simply "Brother". While at Carson Long Military Academy in Pennsylvania, Karl forged a close friendship with his tennis buddy, Jack Batteman, a friendship that endured all their days together. Unwavering loyalty to family, friends and associates was a hallmark of his character that he developed at a young age. In the middle of World War II, when everyone's future was so uncertain, Karl met and married the most wonderful girl he'd ever known, Alyce Congdon of Palmyra, Wisconsin. during the war, Karl honorable served his country as a drill sergeant. Many of those young soldiers, who later became known to all of us as the "Greatest Generation", were sent off to war after being trained by Karl Schroff, Sergeant, United States Army. Karl and Alyce struggled through the hardships of their age and raised five children; Judi, Karl Jr., Peter, Janis and Greta. In 1955, following in his father's professional footsteps, Karl and three partners opened an International Freight Forwarding and Customs House Brokerage business in New York city. Known as Karl Schroff & Associates, the firm's enduring success was borne of hard work and long days that are now legend. Karl Schroff has been honored by professional organizations on both sides of the Atlantic for the high standards of integrity and honesty he set for his employees and himself. A devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Hope Church in Carle Place, Karl Schroff practiced his religion as he lived his life, with devotion, loyalty and humility. Although he will be missed by all who came to know him, he gave so much of himself to his family and friends that we can all cherish wonderful memories of his unselfish humanity.
