GREENSBORO, NC-- Sarah Carruth Patterson, age 86, of Pembroke Road, daughter of the late Claude Young Carruth and the late Bessie Barton Carruth, of Campobello, SC, died Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at her home.An 11:00 AM Celebration of her Life was held, Friday September 8, 2006 at First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1000 West Friendly Avenue with Dr. Steve Pressley officiating.Mrs. Patterson was born on October 10, 1919 in Polk County, NC. Sarah graduated from Campobello High School and Asheville Teachers College and did graduate study at UNCG in Greensboro. Her teaching career began in Spartanburg County, SC and continued in Union County, SC and Gastonia, NC. After her marriage she moved to Asheville and taught in the Buncombe County Schools. She moved with her husband to Greensboro, NC where she taught seventeen and one half years in the Greensboro City Schools at Irving Park Elementary School. Sarah was a member of First Baptist Church, where she served as a member of W.M.U and as an active member of the Charity Sunday School Class.Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by an infant son; her sister, Nellie Carruth, who died as a child; and her brother, Claude Young Carruth, Jr. of Columbus, NC.Mrs. Patterson is survived by her loving husband of sixty one years, Sam Harold Patterson, of the home; her son, Sam Harold Patterson, Jr. of Greensboro; her daughter, Martha P. Hicks, of Greensboro; her sister, Kate Schrum, of Gastonia; four grandchildren, William Sean Patterson, and wife Dawn, of Holly Springs, NC, Alan Benjamin Hicks, and wife Lauren, of Winston Salem, NC, Michael David Hicks, of Greensboro and Sarah Elizabeth Hicks, of Greensboro; two great grandchildren, Carissa and Michaela Patterson; and former son-in-law, David Hicks, of Greensboro.In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405 or First Baptist Church, 1000 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401.Mrs. Patterson was a wonderful sweet loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grand mother and caring friend. She immensely enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, cooking for her family, reading, and her church and visiting her family.The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Norins and his staff, and a special thank you to Avius Moore, Renee Maness, Kysha Potts Arena Whittle and the lovely people at Hospice for the loving care that was given to Mrs. Patterson.The family is being served by the Forbis & Dick North Elm Street Chapel.
