Sarah Mallory Anderson died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of the morning of January 21 at the Perry County Nursing Home in Marion, Alabama, at the age of 88. Mrs. Anderson was born on December 10, 1924, in Greenwood, Mississippi, the third child of Mississippi Delta planter John Mallory Davis and Mary Ella Glass, of Uniontown, Alabama. She grew up on the banks of the Yazoo River, in Morgan City, Mississippi, and matriculated at both the University of Alabama and Converse College, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where she obtained her BA degree in Spanish in 1945, the same year that she married her first husband, Charles Watson Terry, a lawyer and diplomat. Between 1959 and 1976 she lived in Indonesia, Taiwan, and the Philippines, where she was known on the diplomatic circuit for her vivacity, linguistic skills, and athletic prowess, particularly in her beloved game of golf. Upon her husband's retirement to Montgomery in 1976, she worked as a realtor. In 1985, Charles Terry died, and in 1991, she married Paul B. Anderson, Sr., who was a four-term mayor of Marion, Alabama. She is survived by her husband, Paul, and four children of her first marriage - Mary Ellen Wade of Seattle, Washington; Edith Terry of Hong Kong; Charles Watson Terry Jr. of Montgomery; and Hilliard Mallory Terry of Warner-Robins, Georgia. She is also remembered in the hearts of her stepchildren, Beverly Anderson Hollister, Nancy Little, Ben Anderson, and David Anderson and the many other citizens of Marion who came to know her in the last years of her life. The funeral service will be held at Kirk Funeral Home in Marion, Alabama on January 24th, at 10:30 AM, with the visitation at 10:00 a.m. tel. (334) 683-6532, followed by interment at the Montgomery Memorial Cemetery, 3001 Simmons Drive, Montgomery, tel. (334) 263-1742. A devout Christian, "queen of hats", and elegant lady, she leaves a legacy of love and a passion for living that will not soon be forgotten.
