Johnson, Sara E. TROY, N.Y. Sara Elizabeth Stuart "Betsy" Johnson, age 67, a social worker and trainer with the Research Foundation of SUNY, died in Troy, on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010 of complications from uterine cancer. Born February 26, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas, Betsy is remembered for her love of her daughter Melinda, Texas, the Chicago Cubs, and for her sense of humor, which was best felt in stories she told of her life and family. Betsy graduated from Eureka College in Eureka, Ill., in 1966. She first began her social work career the same year with VISTA, where she met and married John Johnson. In 1972, she earned a master's of social work from West Virginia University. In 1974, a daughter, Melinda, was born and, in 1977, the family moved to Ithaca, N.Y., where Betsy worked as a social worker with Tompkins County Hospital, and then at Cornell University. In 1999, she began work for the Research Foundation. Betsy is survived by daughter, Melinda A. Johnson of Cambridge, Mass.; a brother, Christopher Stuart of Del Mar, Calif.; and mother, Alpha Mell Stuart of Del Mar. Funeral services will be held in Burton, Texas. The family asks that a donation be made to the Community Hospice in Rensselaer, NY, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 or to Gilda's Club of Albany, N.Y., 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY 12110.
