Sara Alfina Williams, local business owner and loving grandmother, passed from this life to a better one on October 22, 2013 after a courageous second battle with cancer. Born on January 24, 1950, she was 63. The daughter of Joseph V. Maccarone and Angelina G. (Casella) Maccarone, Sara lived her entire life in Pilesgrove. A graduate of Woodstown High School Class of 1968, Sara thereafter attended Glassboro State College where she earned a teaching degree. She taught fifth grade at Paul W. Carleton School in Penns Grove, NJ for several years prior to purchasing the South Jersey Farmers Exchange, Inc. in Woodstown, NJ with her husband in 1979. Interested in a variety of things, she enjoyed working with her hands and enjoyed nature. She took great pride and peace in gardening, where her flower beds at the family business or at her home could always be seen in abundant bloom. She had a very special patience, respect, and talent for growing flowers that very much resembled her loving nature which cultivated her family. She especially liked indoor orchids and violets. In addition to flower gardening, she also enjoyed the calmness, serenity, and fun that the ocean brings. From a very young age, she liked going to the New Jersey beaches. She visited Wildwood every summer to spend time with her parents, brother, grandparents, and cousins at their family home. As the years passed, family time shifted to the beaches of Ocean City. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren there building sand castles, searching for sand crabs, playing miniature golf, swimming in the ocean together, enjoying amusement rides, and doing much more all while having fun together and making memories. Sara was never more content than when being with her family. She was a devoted wife for over 40 years; she and her husband were a team. She was a loving and giving mother who was also a best friend. Her brother was always very close to her heart. Indeed, she was a lot of things to a lot of people but the title she most cherished was "Nana". She was never too tired to spend time with her grandchildren. Special times at home included playing card games, drawing, building race tracks, collecting quarters, swimming, and going on short adventures. Life-lasting memories were created from the many sleepovers at Nana and Poppop's house. Kindness and generosity were very important to Sara and she lived by these values everyday both at the family business and at home with her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. She was fair to everyone and touched the lives of all she knew. She served many people and took quiet pride and happiness in helping others. Sara was a pillar of strength and courage who was guided by her faith. Sara served on the Salem County Ag Development Board as Treasurer for over 15 years. She also attended Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit Church in Woodstown, NJ. Sara is survived by her husband of 40 years, Lee C. Williams, Jr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Christina M. and James Catalano II; her grandchildren, James III and Josephine Sarah Catalano; her brother and sister-in-law, Vern and Barbara Maccarone; her mother-in-law, Georgia Williams; and her brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Kathy Williams, and Allen Williams and friend Nola. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her father-in-law, Lee C. Williams, Sr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 26th in the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit Church/St. Joseph's Church, 51 Broad Street, Woodstown. A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 PM on Friday, October 25th and from 8:30 to 9:45 AM on Saturday in the H.T. LAYTON FUNERAL HOME, 102 S. Main St., Woodstown. Burial will follow Mass in Lawnside Cemetery in Pilesgrove.
